Depending on where you are coming from then without a degree your choices are maybe a "working holiday visa" or to get on some kind of exchange programme. Usually asking at the Japanese embassy is a good idea!

As for places with no trains or buses, everywhere has at least buses, even the smallest places!

Hi Wayne,

Usually having an education in Education doesn't really make much difference (actually it can be a hindrance and source of frustration when you see how horrendous the education system is over here!) But for your own skills as a teacher it always helps to know as much as you can.

If you have the charisma and the personality then usually age doesn't matter than much, maybe JET is a little more strict, but I know many teachers in their 40s over here!

How are you doing? my situation is similar to the one above. You see i will be getting my TEFL certificate and TEFL Diploma, plus to add a I have a cooking certificate but no university degree so what are my chances?

Just to add would it be possible to get a job in the country part of japan like where there are no trains or buses. Something like small town/village?
If possible can you give me any places that would except me.

Hi ya Richard

Hey I am totally thrilled to have come across your stuff ( first saw your TESOL clips ) Very inspiring to see such a rock star language teacher.

I have just started doing a BA Degree in Linguistics for Language Teaching at Auckland Uni.
I will also do the Cambridge or Trinity TESOL course and certificate some time in the next few years as well.

Do you think having my minor ( or double major) in Education would hold more value in getting a good job in Japan?

I would much prefer to do Japanese as my minor or double major subject but at first thought that 'Education' would carry more weight or credibility.
in the eyes of companies and and language schools.

Also I heard the Jet Program doesn't hire people over 40...I am 42 and may not head to Japan to teach for about 4 years...so is this really an issue?

Thanks
Cheers
