A: Hi Jeffrey,
Good question, and one that is tough to answer. If you were super, super careful with your money, stayed in the cheapest places, ate really cheap lunches and didn’t travel you could get away with $100 a day or a touch less. Of course if you’re not careful you could easily spend thousands of dollars.
More realistically a medium level touristy hotel will probably be between 6,000 and 12,000 per person per night ( remember it’s per person here, not per room!) and a really good lunch could be 1,000 yen. Dinner is always more expensive but if you eat in cheap places 1,000 or 2,000 should be OK. Travel is the real killer, it’s $100 from Kyoto to Hiroshima on the bullet train and obviously much more from Tokyo.
I came on the JET programme so just had bring enough money to survive till my first pay check. But setting up a house, welcome parties etc. quickly chewed through $2000+ !
I’m not sure if that helps at all?
