How to learn Kanji?

Q: Hello,  I’m starting to learn japanese and I know very little. But i am worrying about the kanji, how much kanji do I need to learn if i want to live in japan, and where can i learn these? (other than japanese classes) This will help alot as i’m self teaching japanese.   Thank you. – Tom

A: Hi Tom

To live in Japan you don’t actually need to know any kanji, some people get by with only knowing 1 or 2, or sometimes even less!

Of course though the more you do know the more productive you are here.

I’ve done quite a few posts on learning Kanji in the past, here are some that might help:

Okay, I am learning Japanese right now, With the help of a friend and video chats. But what I was wondering is how do you read books in Japanese, are they kanji, hirigana and katakana all in one? or are there seperate books that is specifically kanji/ hirigan/ katakana etc. And since I live in America, where can I buy books in Japanese?

With the exception of books for really little kids then all books have all three, kanji, hiragana and katakana. Often they “spell out” the tougher kanji with hiragana above it. Books in Japanese, I guess Amazon would be the best, or a Japanese bookstore like Kinokuniya if you are in a major city!
